JOHANNESBURG – The Proteas are set to embark on an exciting three-match KFC T20 International (T20I) series against Pakistan, scheduled from 10–14 December. White-ball head coach Rob Walter has announced a 15-player squad brimming with experience, returning stars, and emerging talents.
With Aiden Markram unavailable due to Test duties against Sri Lanka, Heinrich Klaasen has been entrusted with the captaincy. Known for his fearless batting and ability to dominate bowling attacks, Klaasen will now bring his tactical nous to the fore in what promises to be an enthralling series.
Squad Highlights: Familiar Faces and New Opportunities
The squad sees the return of several key players. Anrich Nortje, the pace powerhouse, and Tabraiz Shamsi, the enigmatic spinner, make their comeback after last featuring in the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2024. Joining them is all-rounder George Linde, whose outstanding domestic form—both with bat and ball—earns him a spot after a two-year hiatus from the T20I setup.
The absence of regular all-format stars Aiden Markram, Marco Jansen, Keshav Maharaj, Kagiso Rabada, and Tristan Stubbs, due to a quick series turnaround, has paved the way for younger players to shine. Ottneil Baartman, Ryan Rickelton, and Kwena Maphaka are among the talents eager to seize their opportunity.
Walter expressed confidence in the team, stating: “All 15 players are capped, and we’re looking to build on the experience within the group as we continue to grow as a unit. Heinrich brings vast experience and a deep understanding of the game. We’re excited to see him lead this dynamic group. George Linde’s strong domestic performances also add depth, while the return of Anrich and Tabraiz strengthens our bowling attack, which will be vital against a quality Pakistan side.”
Pakistan: An Unpredictable Powerhouse
Facing Pakistan is never straightforward. Led by the elegant Babar Azam and spearheaded by the fiery Shaheen Afridi, Pakistan brings a mix of brilliance and unpredictability that can topple any opponent. Their spinners and game-changing batsmen add an element of surprise, setting the stage for a thrilling cricketing chess match.
